Dyatlov Pass Incident was the event that took the lives of 9 Russian students, hiking the Ural Mountains, on the night of February 2nd 1959. The real cause of this tragedy is still unknown, with many hypothesis arising during the years.

Arrival at Ivdel
25 January 1959
A ski team made up of 8 men and 2 women, students and graduates of the Ural Polytechnic set out for a difficult winter expedition. Their goal was to reach the Otorten mountain, which in the Mansi language (an indigenous people living in Tyumen Oblast, Russia) means “Don’t go there”.
The team consisting of experienced hikers and skiers was led by Igor Dyatlov.
They arrived at Ivdel, a central city of the northern province of Sverdlovsk, Oblast.
Travel by truck to Uizhai
26 January 1959
Hikers managed to catch a lift by a truck that took them to Uizhai.
The group stayed in the village for the last night before their journey.
The beginning of the hike
27 January 1959
The group starts their journey to reach the Otorten mountain.
The morale of the team was very high and nobody had the feeling of the inevitable tragedy about to occur.
Yudin leaves the group
28 January 1959
One of the crew members, Yuri Yudin becomes ill and decides to go back to Uizhai.
The 22 year old student was the only surviving member of the expedition.
The trip continues
29 January 1959
The group is following the valley and river heading towards the Otorten Mountain.
They are travelling on frozen lakes using the old Mansi trails.
A day before the final attack
31 January 1959
After their 4th day of march, the group sets up a camp by the Auspia river, where they left some of the supplies awaiting their comeback.
The last camp
1 February 1959
The group set out for a 2.5 mile trip in difficult weather conditions, they set up a camp on the slope of Kholat Syakhl at about 4 pm.
The group settled down for the night. Later in the evening, the tragic events took place.
The tragic events begin
1 February 1959, about 10:00 P.M.
Something caused an instant panic among the members of the expedition.
The group ripped the tent from the inside and fled downhill to the nearby forest (about 300m). They lite a fire and stayed there for about 2 hours.
After that, three of them: Igor Dyatlov, Zinaida (Zina) Kolmogorova and Rustem Slobodin tried to come back to the camp. They failed and collapsed at different places 300, 480 and 630 meters from the fireplace.

The rest of the group decides to take the clothes off of the dead bodies, put them on and go deeper into the woods.
Between 12:30 a.m. and 1:45 a.m. Dubinina and Alexander Zolotarev die from chest injuries and hypothermia. Alexander Kolevatov dies from hypothermia.
